Abstract
In my classroom, 305, I find myself struggling to teach my Algebra I students word problems in a successful way. Currently, my students are required to take a Keystone exam in May that determines if they graduate or not. However, currently my behaviorist pedagogy methods are not allowing my students to answer open-ended word problems on this exam. My goal this year is to implement a more constructivist approach, so that my students can be the discussion leaders and I will be the facilitator of these math word problems.
My goal is to have my students use Dan Meyer’s Three Acts of a Mathematical Story, as a technology component to help foster their classroom discussion. These technology pieces, along with my new teaching pedagogy, will help bring this content to life and ultimately give my students increased understanding of the algebraic content, which will lead to better performance on the Keystone exams.
