Transforming Room 305
By the end of the school year I want my students have the abilities to read through a word problem, pick and choose the information they need to use, compute the answer, and finally explain their reasoning confidently. My goal for my classes for this upcoming school year, is for each of my students to successfully navigate through at least 3 of the 4 open-ended, word problems on their Keystone exam in May.
Currently my students complete problems in a I Do, We Do, You Do classroom environment. However, this behaviorist styled classroom is not allowing for student success. Over the course of the year, students will be using Dan Meyer’s Three Acts of a Mathematical Story to move from this behaviorist classroom to a student-centered, constructivist classroom. Students will watch videos and discuss questions in small group and class settings with myself acting only as a facilitator.
Over the year, students will have check-ins where they will need to demonstrate their ability to navigate a word problem, as well as comment on their confidence level on completing these problems. Over the course of the school year, my students will have the tools in their toolbox to be successful on their Keystone exam.
